Frequently Asked Questions

What/Who is Happy Tummy?

We are a family-based Meal Planning Website who cater for people with intolerances and allergies; specifically gluten and dairy. We provide you with five recipes, and a shopping list each Thursday evening, allowing you the time to shop over the weekend, and be prepared for the new week ahead.

Our goal is to bring you easy, and tasty gluten-free and dairy-free meals that are family friendly! All recipes have been tested at home, and approved not only by myself and my husband, but also our children (they take their role very seriously)!

What do I get when I subscribe?

Sign up for a weekly plan, and every Thursday you will receive a dinner plan email, with five recipes, and a shopping list. You can choose which meals to make, on which days, so as to fit them around your schedule; there will be a variety of meals with different prep times to make it easy to schedule around your needs.

What Qualify’s You to Offer This Service?

I have no formal qualifications with regards to nutrition, however, I have nearly a decade of working with and adapting recipes that work for us as a family, and are safe. I have had my fair share of failures in the kitchen, and I still do – what I bring you is what has worked for us, but be aware that it may not work as well for you. Your oven may cook quicker, or maybe you use a different gluten-free flour, so the dough looks different, or maybe your family just doesn’t like one of the dishes – feel free to tweak and change things to suit your needs, this is how most of these recipes came to be… I started off with one recipe, and it evolved into what you have today through tweaks and changes as I figured out what worked and what didn’t.

What Makes Us Different to Any Other Meal Planning Website?

Unlike other meal planning websites, we focus solely on those of you with gluten and dairy allergies or intolerances. All our meals are safe for you, and all of them are family-friendly, using ingredients found in either local supermarkets or Bin Inn. Obviously catering for allergies is often more expensive, however, we do our best to keep everything as inexpensive and simple as possible for you.

We are also going to be sending out a regular newsletter, which will include a link to a free recipe each time; these recipes will be covering other meals (desserts, baking, snacks, lunches and breakfasts) as well as dinners. The newsletter will also offer tips, hacks and information relevant to what is happening here at HappyTummy.

At this stage we are not catering for any other allergies; however, when recipes are naturally egg-free, soy-free, nut-free etc., this will be made obvious. In the future we are hoping to expand to include alternatives to other allergies, as well as options for the low FODMAP diet, etc.

Note: I don’t make up all these recipes myself (I simply haven’t had the time when I was a full-time working Mum), these are recipes I have collected over the years, and have adapted to suit our family’s likes and dislikes. However, wherever I can I will always acknowledge where the original recipe came from – whether it is from the internet, or from a book.

Do I have to be a great cook?

No, most recipes are just your basic ‘cook at home’ meals, that anyone can prepare – I am no chef or nutritionist, and I don’t cook like one.

When my husband was first diagnosed with numerous intolerances, I could not cook to save myself, let alone him! What I bring you are many years of trial and error, as I taught myself to cook and began to really enjoy my time in the kitchen.

Will the meals cost a lot to make?

Allergy-friendly foods, in a general sense, cost more than the average foods do. However, we do our best to bring you meals made with simple ingredients, keeping the cost to a minimum as far as we are able to. We live in a small town ourselves, and only have access to two supermarkets, so the majority of our ingredients should always be available to you locally whatever your living situation, as that is how we shop. We try to pop into Bin Inn whenever we are out of town, and pick up ingredients we don’t have access to as easily; and whenever I have a recipe that uses things not so readily accessible, I will mention this in the notes and the grocery list for that week, and where possible I will give alternatives.

I will be preparing these recipes and eating them with my family about a month ahead of you; this allows me time to adjust things, rearrange things, figure out preparation times, and make sure I have caught everything in the grocery list that you need. This also gives me the chance to give you an estimate of the cost of each list, and each meal on the list; as well as offering you valuable information as necessary (e.g. how to stretch it, change the flavour if it’s not to your taste, use leftovers in a different way, freeze the extra for another night, batch cook if there are two recipes using the same base etc). I want to make these meals as easy and stress-free as possible for you, as well as family-friendly and safe.

How long do these recipes take to cook?

I offer a variety of meals, with different preparation and cook times (these will always be shown on the top of each recipe); knowing that everyone has different needs and different schedules to keep to. They can range from dinner on your plate in 30 minutes, to upwards of two hours (that would be more about cooking time than preparation though). This gives you the chance to go through your schedule, and arrange your meals based on your activities and responsibilities; and allows for the variety that often gets missed when you’re busy and aren’t able to spend the time planning ahead.

I find, that with the allergies, there is no chance of ‘having a night off’ and going to get take-aways, or using prepackaged foods from the supermarket, so everything has to be cooked from scratch, and this always takes longer. It is one of the things I have found the most frustrating as a full-time working Mum, so I will be offering advice on when it is easy to cook double, and what is a good freezer meal; so that on those nights when everything turns to custard, or you’re just too tired to cook – there are always quick and easy options available.

How much does a subscription cost?

We want to keep Happy Tummy as affordable and as easy as possible, so that anyone who is dealing with allergies and intolerances can access us, no matter what their situation.

We charge $5.99 per week, which gives you FIVE recipes, and a shopping list; it also gives you access to our archives, and all the other recipes already available within here (and these include some breakfast, snacks, baking, lunches and desserts; not just dinner recipes).

How many people do the recipes cater for?

We are a family of four – two adults and two primary-school-aged children, so all my recipes are made to cater for a family of four. However, my husband eats leftovers for lunch the next day (as gluten-free bread is so expensive), and we often feed extra people a minimum of three times per week. So generally you will find these meals will stretch to between four to five adult-sized meals without having to add extra (giving you options for lunch the next day), or there will be notes telling you how you can easily stretch it if more is required.
